SUNSET IN AMAZONIA

POR DO SOL NA AMAZÔNIA

IT WAS FEBRUARY 67,
WE WERE DOING A TEST TOUR FOR THE VOLKSWAGEN BRASIL,
TO FIND OUT HOW 1300 AND 1500 VEHICLES WERE GOING TO PERFORM.
THE SHOT ABOVE WAS TAKEN FROM THE BOAT, GOING UP THE TOCANTINS RIVER,
ONE OF THE BIG AMAZON AFFLUENTS.
THREE SEDANS, THREE KOMBIS AND A VW PICK-UP WERE BEING TRANSPORTED
IN THIS BOAST. THE ROAD, OR WHAT IT WAS ITS NAME,
ENDED AT THE RIVER, AND OUR DESTINY WAS BELEM (PARÁ)
AT THE END OF THE ROAD BELEM-BRASÍLIA, BEING OPENED OUT THAT TIME.

ERA FEVEREIRO DE 1967,FAZÍAMOS UMA VIAGEM DE TESTE
DA VOLKSWAGEN DO BRASIL PARA ANALISAR O COMPORTAMENTO DA
NOVA LINHA DE VEÍCULOS A SER LANÇADA DE 1300 E 1500 CILINDRADAS.
A FOTO FOI TIRADA DO BARCO QUE SUBIA O RIO TOCANTINS,
UM DOS GRANDES AFLUENTES DO RIO AMAZONAS.
TRÊS SEDANS, TRÊS KOMBIS E UMA PICK-UP ESTAVAM NESSA BARCA!
A ESTRADA, OU QUE NOME ISSO PUDESSE TER,
SAIA DE TERESINA E ACABAVA NO RIO TOCANTINS!!
E O NOSSO DESTINO ERA BELEM DO PARÁ NO FIM DA RODOVIA, QUE IA DE BELÉM A BRASÍLIA.

THE WHITE AND GREEN LINES SHOW THE WAY
FROM TERESINA TO CAROLINA (THE WHITE LINE) AND FROM CAROLINA TO IMPERATRIZ (THE GREEN LINE).
OUR TOUR LEFT FROM SÃO PAULO, BUT THIS IS A LONG STORY,
NOT SO INTERESTING AS HOW WE GOT TO TERESINA!
ANYONE COULD GET THERE EVEN A MOTORCYCLE.
THE MAP BELOW SHOWS THE BEGGUINING OF OUR ADVENTURE
THROUGH THE AMAZON TERRITORY, IN A VW BUG.

OS TRAÇOS BRANCOS NO MAPA REPRESENTAM OS CAMINHOS DE
TERESINA A CAROLINA (O MAIS LONGO)
E DE CAROLINA A IMPERATRIZ (O MAIS CURTO).
A SAÍDA FOI DE SÃO PAULO, MAS ISTO DARIA UMA LONGA HISTÓRIA!
NÃO É TÃO IMPORTANTE COMO CHEGAMOS EM TERESINA!
QUALQUER PESSOA CHEGARIA LÁ ATÉ DE MOTO!
NO MAPA ABAIXO O INICIO DE NOSSA AVENTURA PELA AMAZONIA,
E DE FUSCA!

GETTING TO TERESINA, WE WERE INFORMED THAT ONLY A VAGRANT
(A PERSON WHO KNOWS THE TERRITORY AS THE PALM OF HIS HAND)
COULD TAKE US TO BELEM-BRASILIA ROAD.
BUT WE WERE NOT INFORMED THAT THIS ROAD ENDED AT THE TOCANTINS RIVER
IT TOOK US SIX DAYS FIGHT TO GET TO CAROLINA,
A CITY AT THE BANKS OF THE RIVER.
THE ROAD SHOWN IN THE SHOTS BELOW EXPLAIN
WHY IT TOOK US SIX DAYS TO TRAVEL ONLY 300 KM,
AND EVEN THIS THANKS TO THE VAGRANT,
BECOUSE IF IT WAS NOT FOR HIM, WE WOULD BE THERE TODAY!

EM TERESINA FOMOS INFORMADOS DE QUE SOMENTE UM ANDARILHO,
(PESSOA QUE CONHECE A REGIÃO COMO A PALMA DE SUAS MÃOS),
PODERIA NOS LEVAR À RODOVIA BELÉM-BRASÍLIA!
PORÉM NÃO FOMOS INFORMADOS DE QUE A ESTRADA
TERMINAVA NO RIO TOCANTINS!
FORAM SEIS DIAS DE LUTA PARA CHEGAR A CAROLINA,
CIDADE ÀS MARGENS DO RIO.
ESTA ESTRADA QUE ESTÁ ILUSTRADO NAS FOTOS ABAIXO,
EXPLICA POR SI SÓ O PORQUÊ DE TERMOS GASTO TANTO TEMPO (SEIS DIAS)
PARA PERCORRER APENAS 300 QUILÔMENTROS!
E ISSO GRAÇAS AO ANDARILHO,
CASO CONTRARIO ESTARÍAMOS POR LÁ, ATÉ HOJE!
--
THIS IS WHAT WE COULD TRULY CALL AN “OFF ROAD”!
ONLY TRUCKS WOULD BE ABLE TO PASS OVER THE TRACKS LEFT BY THE TYRES!
OUR VW BUGS WOULD NEVER GET OVER,
ALSO NOT EVEN THE KOMBIS.

ISTO É O QUE SE PODE CHAMAR DE UM VERDADEIRO "OFF ROAD"!!
APENAS CAMINHÕES PASSARIAM PELA TRILHA DEIXADA PELOS PNEUS!
NOSSOS FUSCAS JAMAIS CONSEGUIRIAM PASSAR,
POIS NEM AS KOMBIS CONSEGUIRAM!

AND WHAT HAPPEN TO THE ROAD!
WE EVEN MET A SLOTH!
IT WAS A REAL ECOLOGICAL ADVENTURE!

CADÊ A ESTRADA?
ATÉ UM BICHO PREGUIÇA ENCONTRAMOS!
FOI REALMENTE UMA AVENTURA ECOLÓGICA!

THERE WERE SEVEN CARS AND FOURTEEN HEROES!!
IN EACH CAR WE ALTERNATED BETWEEN DRIVING AND SAILING.
SOMETIMES, SAILING CONSISTED OF SHOWING OUR PARTNER
HOW TO AVOID FALLING IN TO THE RIVER!!!

HAVIA SETE CARROS E CATORZE HERÓIS!!
EM CADA VEÍCULO FAZÍAMOS O REVEZAMENTO ENTRE PILOTAR E NAVEGAR!!
ÀS VEZES NAVEGAR ERA FAZER ISSO:
ENSINAR O CAMINHO AO PARCEIROPARA NÃO CAIR NO RIO!

THE CONCRETE WAS NOT DRY YET!

ASFALTO NOVO, NEM HAVIA SECADO AINDA!

LEFT: YOU ARE THINKING THAT I WAS NOT THERE?
IT IS NOT A PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPOSITION!
HANGING ON A BAR IN A BOAT, SAILING THE TOCANTINS!
RIGHT: YOU CAN SEE ONLY 2 KOMBIS, BUT
THE OTHER FIVE VEHICLES WERE ON THE BOAT!
IT WAS A BOAT TO TRANSPORT CATTLES!

À ESQUERDA: VOCÊS ESTÃO PENSANDO QUE EU NÃO ESTAVA LÁ!!
ACREDITAM AGORA? E NÃO É MONTAGEM!!
PENDURADO NUMA BARCA NO TOCANTINS!
À DIREITA É POSSÍVEL VER DUAS KOMBIS,
PORÉM OS SETE VEÍCULOS ESTAVAM NA BARCA.
ERA UMA BARCAÇA DE LEVAR BOIS!

AT LAST WE REACHED THE BELEM-BRASILIA ROAD,
AFTER WHAT WE HAD BEEN THROUGH BEFORE GETTING THERE,
THE ROAD LOOKED LIKE A REAL CARPET!
WE CAME BACK SAFE AND SOUND BUT WE CAN NOT SAY THAT THIS APPLAY
TO THE VW BUGS AND KOMBIS!

FINALMENTE NA BELÉM-BRASÍLIA!
DEPOIS DO QUE ENCONTRAMOS ANTES,
ISTO É UM VERDADEIRO TAPETE!
VOLTAMOS TODOS, SÃO E SALVOS. PORÉM NÃO POSSO DIZER O MESMO
DOS FUSCAS E DAS KOMBIS!

SOMETIMES, THE TRAFFIC GOT DIFFICULT
BUT THE COWBOYS EASILY PUT THE THINGS RIGHT!

ONE OF THIS DAYS I’LL TELL YOU THE END OF THIS ADVENTURE!

ÀS VEZES O TRÂNSITO FICAVA CONGESTIONADO!
PORÉM, OS VAQUEIROS LOGO DAVAM UMA JEITO!

UM DIA CONTO PARA VOCÊS O FIM DESSA AVENTURA.

VOLTAR AO INICIO DA PÁGINA

Santilli

Quem me dera ter feito parte dessa expedição.

Now that is not your everyday adventure Luis! Yikes that looks quite gruelling. I'm glad you made it back! Those photos from the

Quite amazing _ will have to show it to my husband. He loves VWs and has owned many of them over the years. Happy Skywatch Friday!

Your photos and story are fascinating! One of a kind!

Pai, maravilhosas as fotos!!!
A Paula topa...
Beijo,

I was born in February of '67... and I've always wanted a VW Bus... :)

Thanks for stopping by Prairie Visions!!

Oh MY! This is amazing! We used to own a white Volkswagon Bug in Hawaii and transported it to Illinois. It always worked beautifully and we loved it...until the air conditioning died. We still feel very nostalgic when we see a "bug."

What a great adventure...looking forward to finding out how it ends. VWs are great cars....my 1st car was a blue 1967 VW & my current car is a blue 2006 VW Polo. Thanks for visiting my blog.

Thanks for sharing the adventure, Luiz. I particularly enjoyed the 40-year old photographs. Everything seemed to look so different back then.

Wow, that's an amazing trip. Looks like the roads I travel on - but we have 4WD trucks, not Volkswagons!

What an amazing adventure. I love the shot of the sloth... never seen them in the wild, only at zoos. Interesting history lesson.

Luiz,

I really enjoyed your post. The maps made it much easier to comprehend the difficulty of distance combined with the conditions! What an adventure it was getting the vehicles to their destination. Makes our bad roads seem so easy by comparison!

Thanks for your visit to my blog and your comments! Have a wonderful weekend!
